The Pearl of the Orient

Shanghai is China's most cosmopolitan city — a place where French colonial villas sit beside futuristic supertall skyscrapers, and where century-old teahouses share alleyways with Michelin-starred restaurants.

The city pulses with creative energy: from the curated boutiques of the Former French Concession to the neon-lit ferry rides across the Huangpu River, every corner offers a new discovery.

With a jaw-dropping skyline, world-class museums, bullet-train connections to every major Chinese city, and a food scene that spans from humble soup dumplings to cutting-edge tasting menus, Shanghai is Asia's unmissable metropolis.

Before You Fly

Set Up WeChat Pay

Cash is disappearing. Set up WeChat Pay or Alipay before arrival — or ask your hotel concierge to help. Many street vendors no longer accept cash.

VPN Required

Google, Instagram, and most Western apps are blocked. Download a reliable VPN before boarding your flight — you cannot download them once in China.

Metro is King

Shanghai's 20-line metro system covers the whole city. Buy a rechargeable transit card at any station for seamless travel. Signs are in English.

Bargain at Markets

At places like the Yuyuan Bazaar, bargaining is expected. Start at 30% of the asking price and work your way up to a mutually agreeable deal.

River Ferry at Night

Take the Huangpu ferry (a few yuan each way) instead of tunnels when crossing between The Bund and Pudong — the night views are extraordinary.

Visa Requirements

Many nationalities now qualify for 144-hour visa-free transit or longer stays. Check current rules well in advance of your trip.
